Clevedon Canoe Club

PROGRAMME INFORMATION

The club runs a busy programme of events – with weekly social paddles and a range of sea, river and canal paddling trips throughout the spring, summer and autumn, and swimming pool training sessions in the winter. Please see the calendar below for dates.

General details for these events are shown below. For specific details, non-members please contact us by email to register your interest, and members please use the club’s Spond bookings app.

Please email us if you need any further information on any of this.

lake sessions information

Lake sessions mainly take place at Clevedon Marine Lake – meeting at the canoe club boat shed. We will kit you out and help with boat selection. The club has a good selection of boats, including sea kayaks, open canoes and paddle boards. We will supply buoyancy aids and safety helmets. For safety reasons, helmets must be worn whilst using club equipment on the lake.

You will need to wear suitable clothing. A wetsuit , or cycling clothes are ideal with layers that can be increased or decreased as needed. Water/neoprene shoes are ideal but not trainers, wellies, crocks or bare feet. If you have unsuitable footwear, we are sorry but you will not be permitted to paddle due to the safety concerns of becoming trapped in the boat or the possibility of glass in the water or on the quayside. We have some wind proof jackets available if needed. Please bring a Change of clothing, should you get wet. We have changing facilities and toilets.

All boats/ paddle boards and equipment can be supplied by Clevedon Canoe Club for a small charge or you can bring your own boat for free. Parking is not permitted outside the boat shed, though you can access by car to unload before parking elsewhere.

Specific details for each session will be published on the club calendar and for members via Spond.

TRIPS

We run a variety of trips on local rivers, canals and the sea. Most trips will be suitable for all ages and abilities, but some trips will require higher levels of experience. Each trip, advertised in Club emails and on the calendar, will need to be booked via the Club’s Spond app where information on the trip’s location and ability/qualification level required will be shown. The trip organiser will decide if your experience is suitable. Please be aware that trips may be cancelled at short notice depending on weather conditions, and this is the sole decision of the trip organiser.

Trips away from Clevedon will inevitably involve transport of equipment. In many cases, boats can be transported on roof-racks. The trip leader will coordinate equipment transport. The Club also has a trailer.

POOL SESSIONS

Swimming pool sessions are held during the winter season. These sessions are for members only and must be booked through the Spond app. They provide a warm, safe environment to practice specific skills with support from coaches. Pool Sessions take place at Backwell Leisure Centre, Farleigh Rd, Backwell, BS48 3PB.

Pool Sessions are for technical training and practice – they are not designed to be Have-a Go sessions or try-outs. We are unable to store boats at the pool, so we will be delivering boats to the pool on trailers each week. We would appreciate the help of people attending sessions in unloading and loading the trailers into the swimming pool area.

Parents must supervise their children at all times throughout the whole leisure centre building, and should stay on the premises throughout the pool session.

For safety, general swimming is not permitted. For Safeguarding reasons, everyone must wear suitable clothing. This should be swimming shorts and a t-shirt. We do not recommend the following – speedos, lycra shorts, bikinis or 1 piece ladies bathers. Helmets are mandatory, and will be provided.

If you wish to take photographs, you must obtain permission from the Sports Centre reception desk. Please be considerate of others especially if your pictures include children, other than your own.

Please note that Clevedon Canoe Club does not give refunds (unless a session/course is cancelled by the Club). If you are unable to make a session, a credit note towards Club boat or equipment hire may be offered.
